Mark Scheifele

Consensus #98 · C35 · tier 10Week 5: 3 gamesUpdated Nov 2

Scheifele is Winnipeg's first-line center and on the top power-play unit as of early November, so he is a top-of-lineup player with no designation. The one open question is who his wingers are.

Role

Daily Faceoff's Jets page (fetched 2 November, last updated 1 November) has him at center between Cole Perfetti and a right winger. The fetched text names Dawson Mercer there, but the 1 November previews (Inside the Rink, Sportsnaut) list Perfetti-Scheifele-Vilardi, so I would not treat that slot as settled. The same page has him on the first power-play unit with Gabriel Vilardi, Perfetti, Neal Pionk and Kyle Connor. It lists Connor on the second line with Viggo Björck. Dobber's last-game table (Tampa Bay, 29 October) showed Scheifele-Vilardi-Perfetti at even strength and Scheifele on PP1 with Connor, Vilardi and Perfetti, and it had Connor on a different line. Season-opening reporting (TSN) had him between Connor and Perfetti. Competition for his center minutes is not evident in what I read, and the second-line center is Björck (Daily Faceoff) or Lowry (Dobber), depending on the source. The material I found does not give his average ice time this season. This season's stats were not searched.

The case for

He is the first-line center with first-unit power-play time on a line that has been steady, and he has played with Perfetti and either Connor or Vilardi. Perfetti said after a win over Minnesota that Scheifele's vision has to be experienced up close (TSN). The Jets' top line outscored Tampa Bay 2-0 at even strength on 29 October (Dobber).

The case against

His wingers keep changing, and Connor has moved down to the second line in some projections. Last season he played only 15 games, with 12 points and 3 power-play points, and he is 33. Even so, I found no current reporting of an injury or a demotion.

Where analysts split

The disagreement is about his wingers, not his role. Daily Faceoff's fetched page and the 1 November game previews differ on whether Mercer or Vilardi plays right wing beside him, and on whether Connor is on his line or the second line. The beat line rushes (via GameDayTweets) also show him with Connor-Perfetti and with Connor-Vilardi at different times. I found no analyst arguing that his center job or power-play spot is at risk.
