Matt Coronato
Coronato is a top-line right wing with first-unit power-play time on a Flames team that is 6-8-0, and he just had a career-best four-point game.
Role
Daily Faceoff's Flames page, fetched 2 November (last updated 1 November, source Derek Wills), lists the first forward line as Farabee, Backlund and Coronato. It puts him on the first power-play unit with Farabee, Frost, Gridin and Parekh. The second unit is Klapka, Strome, Suniev, Nemec and Sharangovich. Inside The Rink's 2 November preview for the game at San Jose projects the same line. The Morning Puck's table from about 20 days ago showed him at 15:33 of ice time in one game, but that is a single-game figure. I did not find a season-average ice time. Dobber's Frozen Tools showed the same trio at even strength in the 26 October game against Toronto. Coronato is not on the penalty-kill units listed by Daily Faceoff. The nearest competition for his right-wing slot is Sharangovich, Gridin and Suniev, who sit on lower lines.
He has the top-line and first power-play spots, and he scored four points against Seattle on 30 October. Last season he had 7 power-play points in 14 games, and 32 shots on goal in that span. FlamesNation's preseason projection called the Gridin, Frost and Coronato group the de facto top offensive line. A Win Column piece from 1 April said that line was giving him his best stretch of the season. He has a quick release and a strong work ethic.
His line spot has moved around. Preseason projections had him with Gridin and Frost, and he is now with the Backlund and Farabee line. FlamesNation called that line the de facto shutdown line, and it may get tougher assignments and fewer offensive-zone starts. The Dobber line data from the 26 October game showed that trio with a 42.9 shot-attempt share, which is one game. He had no hits and only 2 blocks last season, so he adds almost nothing outside scoring. A team under .500 may also keep shuffling its lines.
Where analysts split
Broad agreement: I found no analyst split on his role. The one open question is whether he stays on the Backlund and Farabee line. Preseason projections put him with Gridin and Frost, and the current pages have him with Backlund and Farabee. I found no beat-writer commentary arguing either side.
