Matt Duchene

Consensus #132 · C46 · tier 10Week 5: 3 gamesIRUpdated Nov 2

Duchene is a long-term injured reserve player who is recovering from core surgery. Reporting points to a return around January at the earliest, so he has no role until then and little certainty after.

Role

He has not played this season. He was placed on IR and then LTIR retroactive to the start of the season, and the team announced core surgery on Oct. 12. His usual role was a top-nine forward who can play center or wing (ESPN). With him out, Hyry has centered the third line (Yardbarker and Dallas Sports Journal, about 19 days old). I did not fetch a current Daily Faceoff line or power-play page, so I can't say who holds his old power-play work. Last season he had 14 power-play points in 57 games, which shows he had power-play work then.

The case for

Coach Glen Gulutzan called the injury chronic, said the team did not want to "kick down the road" any longer, and expects a more seamless return than last year's concussion comeback (ESPN, Dallas Morning News). Surgery fixes the problem that limited him in camp. He had 45 points in 57 games last season and 9 points in six playoff games against Minnesota.

The case against

He is 35 and has now had two injuries in a row: a concussion that cost him 25 games last season, and this core injury. The injury first got a vague lower-body label, he had a setback in the preseason finale, and the team first thought he could play through it. A timeline of about three months is an estimate, not a firm date. Dallas has also started 2-2-1 and lost forward depth, so his return could come into a shaky lineup.

Where analysts split

Broad agreement on the timeline: about three months from Oct. 12, meaning a return after the new year, with no reported dissent. The one open question is how quickly he gets back to his old role and production. Only Gulutzan's "seamless" comment speaks to that, and I found no independent analyst debate.

Injury: IR: assessed avoid

Core muscle surgery, LTIR

Duchene underwent surgery for a core/abdomen injury and is expected out approximately three months, with a return timeline around mid-January. This is a season-altering absence, not a short-term one.

What would change this: Any update on practice participation or revised timeline as the mid-January target approaches.

Research confidence: reported. Outlooks are grounded in web search over current reporting and refreshed through the season.
