Matvei Michkov

Consensus #203 · RW42 · tier 10Week 5: 3 gamesUpdated Nov 2

Michkov is a third-line right wing on a hot streak who holds a first power-play spot, and his current output leans heavily on that power-play role and on a goal surge.

Role

Per the Inside the Rink preview for the 11/01 game against Utah, he plays on the second line (listed there as Line 2) with Porter Martone and Noah Cates. ESPN's line page, indexed about 12 days ago and not re-read, had him on a third line. Beat-writer practice lines from Oct. 31 (via Game Day Lines) show Martone, Cates and Michkov together. The same preview lists him on the first power-play unit with Martone, Denver Barkey, Trevor Zegras and Jamie Drysdale. He played 17:06 against Washington on Oct. 28 (The Morning Puck). CBS Sports (Nov. 1) says he plays mainly on the third line and that the power-play role boosts his offense. Competition for the work is on the right side: Zegras also works the right side on the power play, and Travis Konecny and Owen Tippett, back in the 11/01 projected lineup, run the second unit. I did not read Daily Faceoff's live page, so its listing is unchecked.

The case for

He has scored eight goals and two assists in his last eight games, per CBS Sports. Broad Street Hockey says the Martone-Cates-Michkov line leads the team in 5-on-5 minutes together (41.6) and posts a strong expected-goals share relative to teammates, though on a small sample. Inside the Rink, citing Box Score Junkie, has him at 54.9% Corsi-for with 62.2 shot attempts for per 60, the best among Philadelphia forwards. He also sits on PP1 alongside Martone and Zegras.

The case against

The output is concentrated in a short streak and in power-play goals. Our data has him at 23 shots in 16 games and a minus-8 rating on a team that started 0-9. Broad Street Hockey also noted the Flyers' team expected-goals share was only 36.49% early in the season. The line's own samples are small. His time on the top power-play unit has been unstable in preseason reporting: Zegras and Michkov were tried together and then split, and Konecny took a PP1 rep for Martone at one point. The two stories also overlap, since Zegras and Michkov play the same side.

Where analysts split

The open question is whether the Martone-Cates-Michkov line stays together and keeps a top-six role, or whether he drops back to third-line minutes. A second question is whether he holds PP1 alongside Zegras now that Konecny and Tippett are back in the lineup. Sources disagree on how to label his line (second or third), and I found no analyst piece arguing directly about it.
