Michael Brandsegg-Nygård
Brandsegg-Nygård is a physical second-line winger with second-unit power-play time. The open question is whether his early scoring pace holds, not whether he has a role.
Role
Daily Faceoff's line page (fetched, last updated Oct. 31) has him at left wing on the second line with Andrew Copp and Lucas Raymond, and on the second power-play unit with Rasmussen, Danielson, Copp and Faulk. Inside the Rink's Nov. 2 preview, which cites Daily Faceoff, has the same trio and the same second unit. DeBrincat, Finnie and Arvidsson are the first line, and Raymond, DeBrincat and Finnie run the first power-play unit. Dobber's Frozen Tools showed the Copp-Raymond-Brandsegg-Nygård trio as Detroit's most-used forward line in the Oct. 31 game against St. Louis, at 13:09 of even-strength time. ESPN's player page shows him at about 15:18 to 15:40 of ice time in his last three listed games. He began the season on the bottom line before moving up. Dylan Larkin is on injured reserve per ESPN, and The Hockey News reported trade chatter around him, so the center group could change. I found no report on the rest of the season.
Daily Faceoff and BVM Sports call him a real Calder candidate. They point to a team-best 2.9 points per 60 at 5-on-5 and 8.35 shots per 60. His 62.2% expected-goals share with DeBrincat and Finnie ranked 10th among NHL lines with at least 60 minutes together. He also throws hits at a high rate: 54 in 12 games, fourth in the NHL, a 378-hit pace over 84 games. Todd McLellan has said he is "bullying" his way to the net. Octopus Thrower argues his ice time and role should keep growing.
BVM Sports notes he was scoreless in three of his previous four games and that his point pace could cool. He came into the season with a career high of 44 points at any level, so this scoring is unproven. He has also moved off the DeBrincat-Finnie line. Detroit is 26th in the NHL in scoring at 2.69 goals per game, per Detroit Hockey Now, and his new line's center, Copp, had only three points in the Yahoo/Hockey News piece. He is on the second power-play unit, not the first.
Where analysts split
The split is whether his production lasts now that he has left the DeBrincat-Finnie line for Copp and Raymond. A Daily Faceoff article credits his early output to that line, while BVM Sports questions whether the scoring can be sustained. Reporting is not clear on whether his move off that line and the Larkin situation will change his usage.
