Mitch Marner

Consensus #62 · RW15 · tier 7Week 5: 4 gamesUpdated Nov 2

Marner is a top-six right wing and first-unit power-play facilitator on a Vegas team that is 9-5-1, and he is producing almost entirely as a passer. The only open item is the day-to-day wire note.

Role

Inside the Rink's projection for the Nov. 2 game at Boston has him on line 2 with Trevor Connelly and William Karlsson, and on the first power-play unit with Stone, Hertl, Connelly and Eichel. The Morning Puck's line page (indexed 18 days ago, not re-read) showed the same Connelly-Karlsson-Marner trio. Dobber's Frozen Tools last-game page for Oct. 30 vs. New Jersey lists Karlsson, Marner and Connelly together at even strength. Jack Eichel centers line 1 with Ivan Barbashev and Mark Stone, and Brett Howden and Tomas Hertl are on line 3. NHL.com's season preview said the plan was to start Howden, Karlsson and Marner together, so the line has changed since then. It also said Vegas would move Marner around the lineup as injuries require. Last season he was occasionally used at center. I did not fetch Daily Faceoff, so I cannot say what its page shows today.

The case for

He is on a nine-game point streak, per Vegas Hockey Knight. ESPN's player page (indexed 7 days ago) shows 15 points in 13 games, six of them on the power play, where he is a first-unit facilitator. His total of 13 assists against 2 goals suggests the playmaking is steady. A line change or a return to Eichel's wing would give him more scoring help.

The case against

He has 2 goals on 31 shots in 13 games. ESPN's note says he has gone seven games without a goal while collecting 10 assists, and that kind of assist run can cool off. He is -2 on the season. He is skating on a second line with a Karlsson-Connelly pairing, not with Eichel. Karlsson and Marner are described as defense-first forwards (Review-Journal, from the playoffs). Vegas lost 5-2 to New Jersey on Oct. 30 and was the lower-scoring side on the Karlsson-Marner-Connelly shifts, which were out-shot 5-6 at even strength in that game.

Where analysts split

Broad agreement on role. I found no analysts arguing about his usage this season. The only open question is whether he stays on the Karlsson-Connelly line or moves back up beside Eichel, and I found no reporting that settles it.

Research confidence: reported. Outlooks are grounded in web search over current reporting and refreshed through the season.
