Morgan Geekie

Consensus #116 · C41 · tier 10Week 5: 3 gamesUpdated Nov 2

Morgan Geekie is a second-line right wing who holds a first power-play spot for Boston, with his goal-scoring tied to his shot and the man advantage.

Role

Daily Faceoff's line page (fetched 2 November, last updated 31 October) has the second line as Marat Khusnutdinov, Fraser Minten and Geekie, behind a top line of JJ Peterka, Pavel Zacha and David Pastrnak. It puts Geekie on the first power-play unit with Elias Lindholm, Zacha, Pastrnak and Charlie McAvoy. Inside the Rink's preview for tonight's game against Vegas shows the same lines and units. Beat-writer warmup lines posted 31 October (via gamedaytweets) also have Khusnutdinov-Minten-Geekie. Ice time for this season is not confirmed. The Globe (26 October) says he can play either wing and that the plan is for him to play the bumper spot on the power play. Fraser Minten, Casey Mittelstadt and James Hagens lead Boston's second power-play unit, and none of them is listed ahead of him on the first.

The case for

He has one of the league's hardest shots, per the Boston Globe on 26 October. He has a first power-play role, and the Bruins lead the league in points percentage. The Globe said that through 12 games he had nine points. It also said that every Bruins line is contributing offensively. Fox Sports' player page noted early-season games with a goal and two assists, all on the power play. That page and RotoWire also had him on Pastrnak's line earlier, so he has been tried there before.

The case against

He is no longer on the top line with Pastrnak and Zacha, which is where the early-season fantasy notes pegged his upside. The Boston Globe reported in March that he fell to third-line right wing during a goal drought. In the same article it called the power play sluggish. He is playing the wing next to Minten, who is a younger center, and Khusnutdinov. That line sits behind Pastrnak's in the lineup and is likely to get less ice time than the first. Second-unit power-play players such as Hagens, Mittelstadt and Peterka could compete for his spot if the first unit stalls. That last point is my reading, not something I found reported.

Where analysts split

The split is where he plays: top-line winger beside Pastrnak, or second-line right wing. Older RotoWire and Fox notes called his top-line role secure. Current lines show him on the second line, and one site (The Morning Puck, about six days old) listed a different alignment with him on the left. That site also left him off the power-play unit list, while Daily Faceoff and Inside the Rink have him on the first unit. Whether he keeps that first power-play slot is the question that matters most. I found no analyst piece arguing either side.
