Nick Schmaltz

Consensus #81 · C28 · tier 10Week 5: 3 gamesUpdated Nov 2

Nick Schmaltz is Utah's top-line center and a first power-play unit regular, so he should stay a core scorer for the rest of the season. I found no injury designation, and I found no analyst debate specific to him.

Role

Pre-game projections for Utah's Nov. 1 game at Philadelphia (Inside the Rink, Broad Street Hockey, both dated about Nov. 1) have him centering line 1 between Clayton Keller and Dylan Guenther. Inside the Rink also has him on the first power-play unit with Cooley, Keller, Guenther and Sergachev. It also lists him on the first penalty-kill unit with Lawson Crouse, Sergachev and Weegar. ESPN's line page (indexed about a week ago) has the same top line but a slightly different PP1 of Cooley, Schmaltz and Guenther, with Keller on the point. The Morning Puck page (about 9 days old) showed him at about 18:26 of ice time in one game, with 4:05 on the power play. That is one game, not a season average. Vincent Trocheck centers line 2, and Barrett Hayton centers line 3. I did not fetch Daily Faceoff's live line page, so I am not citing it.

The case for

Daily Faceoff's 2026-27 team preview names Keller-Schmaltz as one of two high-end duos around which Utah builds its forward lines. He also has the top-line center job, first-unit power-play time and penalty-kill work. Last season's line was 16 points, including 8 power-play points, in 15 games.

The case against

Last season he played just 15 games, so the sample is small and he was -9. The wing next to Keller and Schmaltz has rotated between Guenther and Crouse. One Oct. 29 game shown on Frozen Tools had Schmaltz, Keller and Guenther badly outshot (7 shots against, 0 for), and the team's second line (Trocheck, Cooley) did better. That is a single game and not a trend.

Where analysts split

broad agreement on his role. The one open question is who plays the right wing on his line. Guenther is there in the Nov. 1 projections, and Crouse was there in earlier ones. That affects the line's makeup, not Schmaltz's own role.
