Nico Hischier
Hischier is New Jersey's second-line center and captain. He also plays first-unit power play and first-unit penalty kill, and he has been scoring mostly on the power play.
Role
Daily Faceoff's line page, fetched 2 November (last updated 30 October), has him at center between Timo Meier and Luke Evangelista. He is on the first power-play unit with Jesper Bratt, Evangelista, Jack Hughes and Luke Hughes. He is also on the first penalty-kill unit with Evan Rodrigues, Jonas Siegenthaler and Dougie Hamilton. The same page lists Jack Hughes at center between Arseny Gritsyuk and Bratt, and Rodrigues on the third line. Inside the Rink's 30 October preview matches that setup. The Hockey News calls Hischier's line the "do-it-all" line. I did not find ice-time figures for this season.
The Hockey News, in an article from the past week, says the Devils go as Hischier goes. It argues his two-way play makes him a possible Selke finalist if New Jersey stays near the top of the East. He holds the top power-play unit and the top penalty kill. Yahoo's preseason piece said Evangelista's playmaking would help Hischier and Meier get scoring chances. On 23 October CBS/RotoWire had him at 7 points, 22 shots, 9 hits and 5 blocks in 10 games, with four of his five goals on the power play. He then scored twice against Dallas on 27 October.
His scoring leans heavily on the power play. CBS/RotoWire said on 23 October that it would help to see more even-strength production. The Hockey News reports he has four of the Devils' seven power-play goals, on a unit that is 7 for 40 (17.5%) after about a month. If that power-play shooting rate cools, or the unit is reshuffled, his output could drop. He also plays the matchup-heavy second line, while Hughes, Bratt and Gritsyuk are called the team's top scoring line.
Where analysts split
Broad agreement on his role: nobody I found disputes his line, power-play spot or penalty-kill spot. The only open question, raised by CBS/RotoWire and The Hockey News, is whether his power-play-heavy goal total holds up once the unit's conversion rate changes. I found no analyst piece arguing against his deployment.
