Porter Martone

Consensus #96 · RW20 · tier 8Week 5: 3 gamesUpdated Nov 2

Porter Martone is a second-line right wing on the Flyers' first power-play unit, and the season's early evidence suggests his usage is still modest in ice time even though the role is set.

Role

Daily Faceoff's Flyers page (fetched 2 November, last updated 1 November) has him in the third forward group with Noah Cates and Matvei Michkov, and on the first power-play unit with Denver Barkey, Michkov, Trevor Zegras and Jamie Drysdale. The Utah game lineup (1 November, via Philly Hockey Now and Inside the Rink) and the 31 October practice lines (via Game Day Lines) match that. Travis Konecny, Christian Dvorak and Tyson Foerster skate on the second power-play unit. Ice time is the soft spot: The Morning Puck's 28 October box score shows Martone at 14:32, against 19:09 for Zegras and 17:06 for Michkov. The Flyers are 4-8-4.

The case for

Broad Street Hockey (about 10 days old) says the Martone, Cates and Michkov trio leads the team in 5-on-5 minutes together at 41.6, with a strong expected-goals share relative to teammates. It points to Martone and Michkov's cross-ice chemistry. He also holds a first-unit power-play spot, and he had 3 power-play points in 16 games last season.

The case against

Heavy.com (about 3 weeks old) argued the Flyers weren't giving him much playing time, even though he was nominally on the second line. His 28 October ice time was below that of the top-six forwards around him. Broad Street Hockey notes that Cates isn't really a top-line center, so the line may be capped as a second line. The sample is small, and the team is struggling overall.

Where analysts split

The question is whether Martone's line gets promoted or more minutes. Broad Street Hockey sees the Martone, Cates and Michkov trio as one to build around, while Heavy.com says his minutes have been held down. I found no beat-writer reporting of a plan to move him up, so that remains unconfirmed.
