Ryan O'Reilly

Consensus #124 · C45 · tier 10Week 5: 3 gamesUpdated Nov 2

O'Reilly is the top-line center and a first-unit power-play fixture for Nashville, and the only open question in the current reporting is who plays on his wings.

Role

Daily Faceoff's line page (fetched, last updated 1 November) has him centering Steven Stamkos and Mavrik Bourque on the top line. The same page has him on the first power-play unit with Forsberg, Marchessault, Stamkos and Josi, and on the second penalty-kill unit with Edstrom, Hunt and Wilsby. Inside the Rink's projections for 29 October and 31 October match the top line, and the 31 October one has the same first power-play unit. The same 29 October projection shows Stamkos, O'Reilly and Bourque on Line 1 and O'Reilly on the second penalty-kill unit. Alex Kerfoot, Matthew Wood, Shane Wright and Vitali Pinchuk show up as center options on lower lines. I did not find ice-time figures for this season. A Morning Puck listing from about 11 days ago showed him at left wing with 18:01 in one game. That is one game, and the listing is not dated precisely. Last season, per our data, he played 14 games and logged 8 power-play points, a small sample.

The case for

The coaching staff keeps him between Stamkos and a young winger on the top line, and he runs the first power-play unit. A Ship It Nation line page (about 8 days old) read the same way. Last season's 8 power-play points in 14 games show what that unit can produce when he is on it. He also kills penalties, which adds ice time.

The case against

The top line has not been stable. Wood, Kerfoot and Bourque have each been listed beside him in different projections, and a 17 October projection had Kerfoot on his wing. Nashville is 4-4-5 (as of 31 October per Inside the Rink), so the staff has reason to keep shuffling. He is 35, and last season's total was only 14 games, so we have little to extrapolate from. Stamkos is also listed on the first power play, which makes him a possible alternative at center. I did not find reporting that says the staff is considering that move.
