Sam Bennett

Consensus #122 · C44 · tier 10Week 5: 4 gamesUpdated Nov 2

Bennett is a top-six center on a Panthers team that has Barkov, Marchand and Markstrom on injured reserve. His line still has Matthew Tkachuk, but the left wing and the line's rank in the lineup have changed from game to game.

Role

Puckfeed's shift-chart count for the Oct 30 win over Winnipeg has him centering Matthew and Brady Tkachuk. It ranks that trio second among the forward lines, at 10:05 together, behind Vilmanis-Verhaeghe-Reinhart at 12:20. Over the season, Tkachuk-Tkachuk-Bennett is the most-used trio, with 86 minutes in 9 games. A Tkachuk-Bennett-Verhaeghe version has 49:41 in 5 games. ESPN's line page, fetched Nov 2, lists him at center on the first line with Brady Tkachuk and Matthew Tkachuk, with Reinhart centering the second line. Power play: ESPN has him on PP2 with Ekblad, and Puckfeed's Oct 30 count has the same unit with Lundell, Luostarinen and Eller, for 0:32 together. Both pages show PP1 as Verhaeghe, Reinhart and Matthew Tkachuk, plus Seth Jones and Brady Tkachuk. His last five games on Puckfeed average 12:51 at 5v5, 2:02 on the power play and 0:17 on the penalty kill. ESPN's player page shows 12:44 on Oct 27 and 19:16 on Oct 25. The penalty kill belongs to Eller, Reinhart, Luostarinen and Lundell. Competition for his slot comes from Reinhart and Verhaeghe. The wire note says day-to-day, and I found no practice report or coach update after it, so his availability is unconfirmed.

The case for

He anchors the Tkachuk line, which has been the Panthers' most-used trio this season at 86 minutes, with 8 goals for and 5 against. That line is built around Matthew Tkachuk. Barkov and Marchand are on injured reserve, so he gets more offensive responsibility. He also gets some power-play time, 2:02 a game over the last five, with no 0 power-play points last season to lean on.

The case against

His workload is uneven. He played 12:44 on Oct 27 and 19:16 two days earlier, and he sat on the second-ranked line in the Oct 30 shift count. The first power-play unit goes to Reinhart and Verhaeghe, not him. The numbers given to me show 0 power-play points and 6 points in 14 games. He carries a day-to-day wire note with no recovery detail that I could find.

Where analysts split

I found no analyst or beat-writer argument about him. The open question that comes from the usage data is whether he stays on the Tkachuk line or loses ground. Puckfeed's Oct 30 count had Vilmanis-Verhaeghe-Reinhart ahead of Tkachuk-Tkachuk-Bennett, while ESPN's depth page still lists him first-line. Whether he moves up to PP1 is also unaddressed.

Research confidence: thin. Outlooks are grounded in web search over current reporting and refreshed through the season.
