Shane Pinto

Consensus #178 · C57 · tier 10Week 5: 2 gamesUpdated Nov 2

Pinto is a middle-six center who also kills penalties first. His line and power-play slot have changed from game to game, so what he gives you depends on where the Senators put him.

Role

Projected lines from Inside the Rink (Oct 31 and Nov 1 previews) show two different slots. On Oct 31 he centered the third line between Greig and Amadio. On Nov 1 he moved to the second line between Tomasino and Batherson, with Giroux shifted to the third line. Both previews had him on the second power-play unit and the first penalty-kill unit with Greig, Sanderson and Zub. Beat-writer lines posted Oct 21 had Greig-Pinto-Amadio, and an Oct 12 projection (5v5 Hockey) had Amadio-Pinto-Giroux. Cozens and Stützle hold the first and second-line center spots in these previews, and Greig and Giroux are the other names in his area. Last season he had 16 GP and 317 TOI, with 3 power-play points and 1 short-handed point. I could not fetch Daily Faceoff's live page (the fetch failed), so I have no Daily Faceoff reading. The wire note says day-to-day. I found no practice report or coach update on a current injury, and I do not know whether he is playing through anything.

The case for

The Nov 1 projection moved him onto the second line with Batherson, who is on the first power-play unit. He is already the top penalty-kill forward and has a second-unit power-play role. Last season he scored 5 goals in 16 games on 30 shots. Preseason coverage in The Hockey News said he was one of the Senators' best bets for the top six. It also argued for him as a Selke candidate, but that article is about 205 days old and written before this season.

The case against

A preseason projection (Last Word on Sports, August) saw him as a third-line center and top penalty killer. It said that role keeps him away from the top-line snipers and that he is prone to scoring slumps. His power-play time is on the second unit, and lineup moves have not been consistent across the last few games. The day-to-day note adds some risk to his availability.

Where analysts split

The open question is whether the Nov 1 second-line spot between Tomasino and Batherson lasts, or whether he goes back to a third-line role with Greig and Amadio. The sources I found differ from game to game, and I did not find any analyst writing about it.

Research confidence: thin. Outlooks are grounded in web search over current reporting and refreshed through the season.
