Tim Stutzle

Consensus #26 · C13 · tier 6Week 5: 2 gamesUpdated Nov 2

Stützle is Ottawa's top-line center and a first-unit power-play player, and the sources I found show his usage as stable even though his linemates keep changing.

Role

Inside the Rink's projected lines for 10/29 and 10/31 had him between Fabian Zetterlund and Claude Giroux on line 1. The 11/01 preview at Anaheim had Zetterlund and Dylan Cozens beside him. He is on the first power-play unit in all three previews, with Batherson, Halliday, Cozens and Jake Sanderson. The same previews list him on the second penalty-kill unit. Ice time in the previews: 22:21 and 20:14 in the last two games they covered, and a team-high 23:50 in a 10/17 game. Competition for his minutes is not described in what I read. I did not fetch Daily Faceoff's page, and these are projected lines from a preview site, not confirmed lineups.

The case for

The optimists would point to the usage: top line, first power-play unit and more than 20 minutes in recent games. Inside the Rink, citing Box Score Junkie, puts his 2026-27 shot-attempt rates above even (52.1% Corsi-for, 56.9 attempts for per 60 over 308 minutes). He had seven shots in the 11/01 preview's last game, which produced a goal and an assist. Ottawa was 8-5-0 going into 10/29. That record and the usage are the argument for a steady role.

The case against

The sceptic's point is that his finishing is running well above what his chances justify. The same Inside the Rink item says he has nine goals on 3.8 expected. If that cools, his goal total would fall without any change in role. His even-strength wingers also change from game to game, so his line is not settled. Last season's line from our data is 16 GP, 21 PTS and 4 PPP, which is a small sample to anchor on.

Where analysts split

Broad agreement on his role. I found no analyst disagreement about his usage, only unsettled linemates (Zetterlund with Giroux or with Cozens) and the open question of whether his goal rate holds above expected goals. That second point comes from one stats note, not from a debate between analysts.
