Trevor Kuntar
Kuntar is a fringe AHL forward who got a long look in Buffalo's camp and scored on his first Sabres preseason goal, but the club has already returned him to the minors for the start of the season.
Role
Per NHL.com's preseason recap (checked for the September 24, 2026 game at Detroit), Kuntar opened the scoring on a rebound off a broken Sabres clearing attempt while skating on a line with call-up forward Jake Richard. That was a preseason exhibition result, not a regular-season game, and it did not last: on September 25, 2026, Buffalo's own transactions page reported Kuntar was placed on waivers to be assigned to the Rochester Americans (AHL) as the club trimmed its camp roster to 29. He is signed on a two-year AHL deal with Rochester for 2026-27 (Puckpedia, The Hockey News' Amerks season preview) and projects as a depth center there, with a call-up path only if Buffalo has forward injuries once the 84-game season begins September 29.
He improved his AHL production last season (0.52 points per game with Rochester per DobberProspects) and the Sabres clearly used him meaningfully in exhibition play, including a scored preseason goal, showing the organization is comfortable throwing him into NHL minutes if injuries create an opening.
He was waived off Buffalo's active camp roster on September 25, 2026 and assigned to Rochester, and an Elite Prospects scouting note flatly says he is a fringe, replaceable AHL depth forward at this stage of his career with no clear path to a full-time NHL job.
Where analysts split
There is no real analyst disagreement here: coverage is limited to transactional reporting confirming he has been sent to the AHL for the start of the season, not a debate about his NHL line or power-play role.
Research confidence: thin. Outlooks are grounded in web search over current reporting and refreshed through the season.
