Will Smith
Will Smith is a top-six right wing on a Sharks team that has been shuffling its lines, and he has kept a spot on the first power-play unit. The one open question is whether he plays next to Macklin Celebrini or one line down.
Role
Sources checked 2 November. Inside the Rink's preview for tonight's Calgary game has Smith on line 1 with Celebrini and Collin Graf. It also has him on the first power-play unit with Marchment, Celebrini, Stenberg and Orlov. ESPN's line page (indexed 8 days ago, not fetched) also has him on the top line at right wing and on PP1. San Jose Hockey Now logged a drop to second-line right wing on Nov. 1 and a move back up to first-line right wing on Oct. 31. Its current projected lines show him on line 2 with Marchment and Misa. Inside the Rink's Oct. 31 preview agreed, with Smith on line 2 beside Marchment and Misa, while still listing him on PP1. Competition for the work comes from Graf, Stenberg, Sherwood and Marchment, and Misa is the other center in the top six. I could not read Daily Faceoff's own page: the fetch returned only a December 2025 snapshot with no usable content. I have no ice-time figures for this season.
He is on PP1 in every current source I read, and the Oct. 24 game log shows that unit with Celebrini and Marchment. He has also been Celebrini's right wing for much of October, and several trackers still project that top-line spot. If the Celebrini pairing sticks, he gets the team's best linemate and top power-play minutes.
The lines keep changing, and he has moved between line 1 and line 2 more than once in the last few days. In the Oct. 24 game log, the Smith-Graf-Celebrini trio was outshot badly at even strength: 3 shots for and 10 against in 10:26. Last season he went -9 in 15 games, and his 4 power-play points came mostly from that role, so a demotion would cost him both even-strength and power-play minutes. A report from Oct. 31 also links Smith and Michael Misa to Detroit trade talks for a young center. That is a rumor, and I found nothing confirming a trade.
Where analysts split
The split is whether Smith stays on Celebrini's wing or drops to the second line with Misa and Marchment. Inside the Rink's Nov. 2 preview and ESPN have him on line 1. San Jose Hockey Now and Inside the Rink's Oct. 31 preview have him on line 2. Sources agree he is on PP1. His listed position also differs: ESPN and the line pages show him at right wing, while the Oct. 24 5v5 Hockey page lists him at center on PP1.
