Wyatt Johnston
Wyatt Johnston is a top-six center who plays about 20 minutes a night and sits on the first power-play unit, but his status is unclear because the wire lists him day-to-day and I found no update after it.
Role
Previews dated Oct 31 (Inside the Rink, and The Morning Puck citing NHL.com) project Johnston at center between Sam Steel and Mikko Rantanen on the top line. Jason Robertson, Roope Hintz and Tyler Seguin are projected as the second line. Both previews put him on the first power-play unit. Inside the Rink lists that unit as Johnston, Hintz, Rantanen, Miro Heiskanen and Robertson. ESPN's game log shows about 20 minutes a night in October, ranging from 16:40 to 22:50. Hockey-Reference shows 21:41 on Oct 29 against Montreal, where he scored a goal and an assist. Steel, Justin Hryckowian and Hintz are the other players the previews list around him. I did not read a live Daily Faceoff page, so I cannot say what it shows today. I also found nothing on whether the day-to-day note changes his Oct 31 or later status.
He plays a top-line role next to Rantanen and gets first-unit power-play time. He also logs heavy minutes and shoots often, with four or five shots in several October games. The Oct 29 game log shows a goal and an assist against Montreal. He has 8 points in October, according to ESPN.
October production has been modest for the minutes he plays, with several scoreless games despite a high shot count. Dallas has lost recently, 5-1 to New Jersey and 5-2 to Montreal, and the line pairings keep changing. The day-to-day tag adds risk that I could not resolve. He also missed two games in October with an illness, per Rotowire via CBS.
Where analysts split
The open question is who centers whom. Early-season previews had Hryckowian-Johnston-Rantanen. The Oct 31 previews have Steel-Johnston-Rantanen with Hintz on the second line. Dobber's Oct 29 line data, which I could not date reliably, showed Benn and Rantanen mixed with Johnston in different shifts. I found no analyst piece arguing over Johnston's value. The split is in the lines, not in opinion.
Research confidence: thin. Outlooks are grounded in web search over current reporting and refreshed through the season.
