Aday Mara

Consensus #230 · C64 · tier 7Week 3: 4 gamesUpdated Oct 26

Mara is a rookie backup center on a deep Thunder team. Through three games he has played short bench minutes, with a lot of defensive upside and a small role.

Role

He comes off the bench behind Isaiah Hartenstein and Chet Holmgren. He played 12 minutes in his debut at San Antonio and 13 against Denver, per ESPN's game log checked 26 October. Heavy reported 14 minutes in the game after that, when Jalen Williams was hurt and Cason Wallace and Jaylin Williams left early. A Yahoo piece frames the expected job as 12 to 15 minutes a night. SI says Oklahoma City has three bigs who will play more than he does. Thunderous Intentions says he has taken virtually all the backup center minutes behind Hartenstein, though Holmgren's and Hartenstein's minutes may be staggered to limit Mara's exposure. Kenrich Williams also got 7 minutes inside in the Heavy report. I found no usage rate and no back-to-back rest plan.

The case for

Preseason was dominant. Thunderous Intentions has him at 15.2 points and 7.2 rebounds on 79.3% shooting over four games, with a 25-minute start against Milwaukee and 19 minutes against Indiana. Coach Daigneault said his impact outweighed his minutes, and he blocked Victor Wembanyama in the opener. Optimists say his minutes will rise as he adjusts, and an injury to a rotation player (Heavy noted one to Jalen Williams) could open more playing time.

The case against

The ceiling is capped by a crowded frontcourt and a team that is comfortable winning with its starters. SI said he got lost in drop coverage and allowed open alley-oops against San Antonio. Thunderous Intentions notes that conditioning limited him at Michigan, where he averaged just 23.4 minutes. Through two games he scored 2 to 7 points a night in about 12 minutes, and his ESPN L10 line is 4.5 points and 2.5 rebounds.

Where analysts split

The question is whether 12 to 15 minutes is his ceiling or a starting point. Yahoo and SI treat it as the season-long role. Thunderous Intentions expects his minutes to grow over time, and it also expects the Thunder to stagger Holmgren and Hartenstein to limit his exposure. No source I found reports a concrete trigger for more minutes.
