Domantas Sabonis
Sabonis is the Kings' starting center and primary rebounding and passing hub on a team that is 0-6, and nothing in the reporting I found points to a role change.
Role
He has started all 6 games and averaged 37.0 minutes, per Basketball Reference's 2026-27 Kings page (checked Nov. 2). In that span he averaged 16.0 points, 15.8 rebounds and 7.3 assists. Acuff Jr. and LaVine start alongside him. Achiuwa has started 4 of 6 and averaged 28.8 minutes, so he is the main frontcourt partner and backup. SI's preseason pieces listed Raynaud as a bench big. NBC Sports (Oct. 25) reported Raynaud (knee) and Cardwell (calf) set to miss time, with Mogbo next in line behind Sabonis. I did not read a current minutes tracker or confirm anyone's return dates. The wire note about him sitting out a preseason game against Portland is a preseason item and predates the regular season. I found no regular-season injury report or designation for him, and no coach update on what the 'undisclosed' issue was.
He is a high-minute big on a thin roster, and the injuries to Raynaud and Cardwell leave few alternatives. He has put up a rebounding and assist line that few centers match, and he has shot 70.4% from the field. SI's preseason pieces expected a bounce-back from last season's injury-shortened 19-game campaign. Acuff Jr. is drawing a heavy share of the shots, which leaves Sabonis's role as hub and rebounder largely unchallenged.
Sacramento is 0-6, and sactownsports (Matt George, Nov. 1) says coach Doug Christie must choose between leaning on starters for wins and spreading minutes across a thin roster. A 37-minute load for a player coming off a knee injury, with no confirmed depth behind him, raises the chance of rest or a minutes cut. Acuff Jr.'s scoring takes shots that Sabonis used to get. His 3.8 turnovers per game are also a concern. Late last season, in a stretch of a few games after his knee injury, he came off the bench and was sometimes replaced in closing lineups by the rookie bigs, per sactownsports, so a reduced role has precedent. That is from last season, not this one.
Where analysts split
The open question is how long Christie keeps Sabonis at 37 or more minutes in a losing season. The related question is whether the 0-6 start leads to more rest or a rotation shake-up once Raynaud and Cardwell are healthy. I did not find analysts arguing either side explicitly. This is inferred from the beat coverage and the injury situation.
Research confidence: thin. Outlooks are grounded in web search over current reporting and refreshed through the season.
