Victor Wembanyama
Wembanyama is the Spurs' first offensive option and a centerpiece scorer, rebounder and shot-blocker, and the early 2026-27 evidence points to heavy usage with no designation attached.
Role
He has played in all six Spurs games so far. Per CBS Sports' game log (indexed snippet), his first five games ran 34, 32, 29, 27 and 39 minutes. The Oct. 31 Timberwolves game was 34 minutes per StatMuse. The 39 came in a game that went to overtime. He played both ends of the Oct. 23-24 and Oct. 27-28 back-to-backs. SI reported coach Mitch Johnson called it a second night of a back-to-back with "mindful minutes" after pulling him early in the second quarter at Dallas, so minutes management is still on the coach's mind. Offensively, the Oct. 31 game had 34 shot attempts, a career high, and the 921theticket recap says the Spurs' other four starters took 37 combined. Johnson said playing through him is the first option. Dylan Harper leads the team in minutes at 33.7 per game (SI, Nov. 1). I did not read a depth chart or a lineup page, so I can't say who the other starters are.
After a 1-for-13 opener, he averaged 31.2 points over the next five games (921theticket, Nov. 1). He had 36 against Utah and 43 points with 6 blocks against Minnesota, and his shot attempts rose in three straight games. Johnson praised his screening and rolling, and he is being used as the primary option on a team that has won four straight. Optimists see a workload that is rising on both offense and defense.
The 34-shot night produced 17 makes, and 12 of his 14 attempts in one account came within two feet, so the volume could be a function of matchups and a short-handed Minnesota. His opener was a 1-for-13 miss, and he was scoreless from the field early against Houston and OKC (12 points on 1-of-13 against OKC). Coaches are still talking about managing his minutes on the second night of back-to-backs, and he has been pulled early in a game before. Skeptics point to the 65-game rule coverage and last season's calf and knee absences as the reason to expect rest or limits at some point. That is background, not a current report.
Where analysts split
I found no real split among analysts on his role. The open question is whether the surge in shot volume (34 attempts in one game) and the 27-to-39 minute range hold up, or whether Johnson trims minutes on back-to-backs and in blowouts. I found no reporting of a formal rest plan for this season.
