Karl-Anthony Towns

Consensus #13 · C6 · tier 2Week 3: 3 gamesUpdated Nov 2

Towns is the Knicks' starting center and a steady double-double producer, and foul trouble is the main thing that caps his minutes.

Role

Heavy.com lists him at center in the Knicks' starting lineup for the 76ers game. Fox Sports, about 4 days old, has him at 21.8 points, 13.5 rebounds and 3.2 assists in 31.7 minutes over six regular-season games. His recent minutes were 37, 33, 33, 28 and 35, and 24 on opening night when he got into early foul trouble (NBA.com game log and Rotowire). A Daily Knicks piece published today says his foul trouble will keep the Knicks from extending his minutes, and that the team added Andre Drummond. I did not find a reported minutes or usage split with Drummond. RotoWire's page says new coach Mike Brown trimmed his minutes last season from 35.0 to 31.0 and spread the offense around. It also says Jalen Brunson is the other main creator, and he scored 38 in the Bulls game.

The case for

He has posted a double-double in each of his last five games, including 27 points and 20 rebounds against Detroit. He is playing 33-plus minutes in most games, and RotoWire says the contract uncertainty shouldn't change his role as a centerpiece of the offense.

The case against

Foul trouble is recurring. He had 5 fouls in each of the Detroit and Bulls games and was limited to 24 minutes on opening night. Daily Knicks says it will cap his minutes, and with Drummond now on the roster the backup center minutes may be more contested. He also left the Bulls game briefly with an apparent left wrist issue, though he returned and finished with 19 points and 13 rebounds. He carries no designation now. His three-point shooting is uneven (1-5 against Detroit, 0-4 against Orlando), and the Knicks started 0-3.

Where analysts split

Broad agreement on his role as a starter and double-double producer. The one open question is whether foul trouble and the Drummond addition keep him near 31 minutes or let him stay above 33. I found no analyst piece that settles it.
