Alperen Şengün
Sengun is Houston's starting center and primary playmaking hub. He returned from a two-game back absence on Saturday (Oct. 31) and looked unrestricted, though the back is still a watch item.
Role
Starting center. He played 33 minutes in the Oct. 31 win over OKC (16 pts, 9 reb, 9 ast on 6-of-17 shooting). The Houston Chronicle says he leads the team in points, rebounds and assists per game. Before the injury he averaged 32.8 minutes through Houston's 5-0 start (Basketnews). ESPN's last-10 split shows 33.8 minutes over 5 games. Coach Ime Udoka said there would be no minutes limit on Saturday (hottakes.com, citing Underdog NBA). Clint Capela moves back to the second unit when he plays, and Tari Eason and Capela got extra frontcourt minutes while he was out (RotoWire via CBS). ESPN notes Fred VanVleet (knee) and Reed Sheppard (back) were out on Saturday, which raised his playmaking load. I did not find coverage of back-to-back rest plans.
He is the offensive engine and posted a 29-point, 9-rebound, 9-assist, 6-steal game in 37 minutes against Atlanta before the back flared up. He showed no limitations in 33 minutes on his return, and there is no minutes cap. Last season's line was 20.4 points, 8.9 rebounds and 6.2 assists over 72 games (CBS). Houston is 5-0 with him and the Yahoo piece says he gives the lineup its playmaking balance.
Lower-back soreness cost him two games, and Houston held him out on Friday as a precaution after listing him questionable. ESPN says it is unclear whether the back will linger, and Yahoo says one game does not show it is behind him. His return game was inefficient at 6-of-17. His Saturday playmaking numbers may also have been boosted by VanVleet and Sheppard being out.
Where analysts split
The open question is durability: whether the back soreness recurs and brings more missed games or managed minutes. Coverage I found does not frame a real analyst dispute about his role. The sources split mainly on how much to trust one clean game back.
Research confidence: reported. Outlooks are grounded in web search over current reporting and refreshed through the season.
