Al Horford
Horford is a 40-year-old, minutes-capped big man who plays the first few weeks as a backup or fill-in center while Kristaps Porzingis is out indefinitely, and he is now out Saturday with a back issue.
Role
Reporting is mixed on whether he starts. NBC Sports (Oct. 25) says he is expected to play about 20 minutes per game. Fox Sports/RotoWire items say the Warriors planned a small-ball start with Draymond Green and Yaxel Lendeborg up front and Horford in the second unit. He logged 19 minutes off the bench in the season-opening loss to the Lakers, per Yardbarker. Charles Bassey and two-way player Graham Ike compete for the center minutes (Blue Man Hoop). Steve Kerr said they have to expect Horford to miss a lot of games, and a 2025 RotoWire item said he would sit at least one game of back-to-back sets. I did not find this season's back-to-back plan, and I did not read a current depth chart. Our data has him at 74 minutes in 2 games last season, so it is not a useful guide to his role.
With Porzingis out, the Warriors have few true centers. Horford has shooting range, as in his 5-of-8 three-point night in the preseason finale. Curry praised his defense and said he is still disruptive. He closes games well next to Green. Any minutes above the cap would come from a thin rotation of Bassey and Ike.
Kerr openly says he must limit Horford's minutes and expects him to miss many games. The coach has been using Green and Lendeborg as small-ball bigs, which caps the center minutes. NBC Sports and Fox Sports both say the roughly 20-minute workload is too small to make him a viable option in standard fantasy leagues. Now the back issue puts him out Saturday against the Suns.
Where analysts split
The split is over whether the Warriors turn to Horford as the starting center while Porzingis is out or keep him on a roughly 20-minute bench role. Blue Man Hoop argues he would need more minutes and more scoring to make the starting-center plan work. NBC Sports and Fox/RotoWire expect the capped bench role. A second question is how much he plays given the back issue and Kerr's expectation of missed games, and I found no update on the back beyond the wire note.
