Alex Caruso
Caruso is a defense-first sixth man whose minutes have risen early this season because OKC lost wing depth. How long that increase lasts is not yet known.
Role
He has come off the bench in the games reported so far, including the opener and the Oct 20 game at San Antonio (USA Today via Rotowire). He started the final preseason game and a preseason game against Indiana when Chet Holmgren (quadriceps) was out. He averaged about 22 minutes over his first two games (Yahoo Sports, SI-sourced), against a prior Thunder-season high of 19.3. FantasySP lists 21.5 minutes, 8.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists through two games, and calls him the primary sixth man. His rotation competition is Cason Wallace, Ajay Mitchell and rookie Jared McCain (Rotowire, Jul 30). Isaiah Joe, Aaron Wiggins and Luguentz Dort left in the offseason. Beyond the preseason, I found no report of him sitting back-to-backs. In the past two seasons the team has limited his regular-season minutes to protect his health (Thunderous Intentions, Yahoo). Our last-season stat line shows only 3 GP. Outside reports say 56 appearances, so I am quoting no figures from it.
Dort's departure and the loss of Wiggins and Joe leave Caruso as one of two remaining elite perimeter defenders. That forces OKC to ease the minute limits of past years. Early minutes are already above his previous Thunder high, and Yahoo says he will play a bigger regular-season part. He gives steals and all-around production, and Rotowire calls him a strong source of steals.
This is a two-game sample, and Yahoo concedes the minutes could fall as the season goes on. OKC has deliberately held his regular-season load down to keep him fresh for the playoffs. His starts are mostly tied to Holmgren's absence, and his scoring role is small. At 32, injury risk and rest days remain the concern, and that is a general caution I did not see in a current report.
Where analysts split
The split is whether the roughly 22-minute workload holds all year or reverts to his past 18 to 19 minute, health-managed role. SI's piece argues he could be a real starting-lineup option next to Wallace and Mitchell. Rotowire and FantasySP keep him as the sixth man, and I found no report that he has won a starting job.
