Scottie Barnes
Barnes is Toronto's lead offensive engine and a full-time starter. He is coming off a career-high 41 points, and his usage rises whenever Kawhi Leonard is out.
Role
Starter in every game I could confirm: Basketball-Reference's game log shows a start in each of his last four games through Oct. 30, and he played 39 minutes in the Oct. 30 loss to Orlando. ESPN's page showed a 32.2 minutes-per-game average through five games, up to the Oct. 30 game. With Leonard out (knee soreness), NBC Sports had Toronto starting Quickley, Walter, Barrett, Barnes and Poeltl against Orlando. Hottakes, an aggregator, says the same five start Sunday against Minnesota, but I could not confirm that against a beat writer. Barnes competes for shots with Leonard, Barrett and Quickley. I found no published usage rate, and no report on whether he sits back-to-backs. The wire note says he was rested for a preseason finale. That conflicts with the regular season already being under way, so I did not use it for his in-season workload.
With Leonard sidelined, SI's All Raptors describes Barnes as the sole engine of Toronto's offense, and he scored 41 of the team's 114 points against Orlando. NBC Sports calls him a highly valuable fantasy option in any format even with Leonard back, and expects him to bounce back from a 0-for-12 night in Minnesota. He rebounds, passes, steals and scores, so his floor is broader than his shooting.
Toronto's shooting is thin, and Raptors HQ says that crowds slashers like Barnes and Barrett in the halfcourt. His efficiency has been uneven. He shot 0-of-12 at Minnesota on Oct. 25, and ESPN's early road split is 31.6% from the field with 5.5 turnovers per game. His 3-point shooting is weak at 16.7% (ESPN, 5 games). Once Leonard is healthy and playing, shots and the ball are shared among four high-usage starters, and Barnes has missed time in past seasons.
Where analysts split
The open question is how much of his scoring load survives Leonard's return. Coverage from the Leonard-out stretch treats him as the sole engine. NBC Sports says he stays highly valuable even with Leonard back. I found no analyst who put a number on the usage drop, and no clear dissent on his role itself.
