Giannis Antetokounmpo
Giannis Antetokounmpo is Miami's first option and a regular starter, and he has produced like a star in the Heat's early games despite an uneven team start.
Role
He started the Oct. 21 opener alongside Bam Adebayo, and Bobby Portis was the first player off the bench, subbing in for him with 6:28 left in the first quarter (Yahoo Sports). Spoelstra staggered his minutes with Adebayo's. Logged minutes in the games I found: 30 in the opener, 33 against the Pistons, 25 against the Hornets (fouled out), 39 against the Mavericks, and 31 in each of the Hawks game and a win over the Pacers (RotoWire and Fox Sports game logs). One SI Heat site writer expects 32 to 34 minutes a night. That is a columnist's projection, not a coach's statement. I did not find a stated minutes cap or a back-to-back rest plan. The Friday preseason rest note you hold is a preseason item, and nothing I found shows it carrying into the regular season.
He has scored 24 or more in every game I found, and his lines include two triple-doubles, 31 points with 17 rebounds and 10 assists against the Pacers and 29, 14 and 11 against the Mavericks. He is a new franchise centerpiece. The columnist argues he should return above 30 minutes a night after last season, when he played under 30 a game for the first time since his rookie year. Bleacher Report noted he made good passing reads and had seven assists on two turnovers in his preseason debut.
Health is the main worry. Per Bleacher Report he appeared in only 36 games last season, and SI's Heat site attributes that to multiple injuries. Foul trouble has already cut one game short, a 25-minute night against the Hornets that ended with him fouling out. The Heat started 0-for-the-first-few before their first win, and the bench has been criticized as not good enough, which could mean heavier minutes or lopsided games and early benching. A 129-117 win and a 145-125 win show blowouts can also cap minutes, though his 31 minutes in each was normal for him.
Where analysts split
The only disagreement I found is how many minutes Miami will ask of him given last season's injuries. The SI columnist wants roughly 32 to 34 in the way of his career 32.7 average, while the same piece frames the alternative of limiting his workload to protect him for the playoffs. No coach or beat writer statement settles it.
