Jalen Johnson

Consensus #42 · PF18 · tier 4Week 3: 4 gamesGTDUpdated Oct 26

Jalen Johnson is Atlanta's centerpiece for 2026-27: an All-NBA Third Team forward and first-time All-Star who is expected to start and lead the offense.

Role

Projected starting power forward in every preview I found, in a five of CJ McCollum, Nickeil Alexander-Walker, Dyson Daniels, Johnson and Onyeka Okongwu (SI Hawks site, Fantasy Alarm, Yahoo, all within the last month). I found no minutes or usage-rate figures in current reporting, so I give none. The preview coverage describes him as the franchise's lead option. The competition for his minutes is thin: a Fantasy Alarm preview lists Asa Newell and Jock Landale as the frontcourt bench, and Lu Dort, Aaron Wiggins, Corey Kispert and Dorian Finney-Smith as wings. Back-to-back rest plans are not reported anywhere I found. The wire note says he sits Monday's preseason game against the Thunder for rest. That reads as a one-game precaution, and nothing I found suggests more. One oddity: a Yahoo piece says the Hawks opened the regular season on October 21, which does not fit a preseason game on Monday, October 26. I did not resolve that.

The case for

His 2025-26 season was a breakout: 22.5 points, 10.3 rebounds and 7.9 assists per game with 13 triple-doubles in 72 games, a franchise record. He is one of only five players in league history to reach 22, 10 and 7.5 in a season. The starting five went 20-6 once McCollum joined it. Atlanta is now his team after the Trae Young trade, and the up-tempo attack suits him as a playmaker and finisher. He is also 24, so he could still improve.

The case against

The SI Hawks site says his halfcourt game and defense need to improve for the next jump, and his playoff run was poor by its own account. A Yahoo piece says he must become a consistent three-point threat, and he shot 35.2% from deep last season. The Hawks are also deeper at wing and guard after adding Dort, Wiggins and rookie Kingston Flemings. That could mean more lineup tinkering and more shared ball-handling, though no source says his workload will fall. He also played 72 of 82 games last season, so some missed games are plausible.

Where analysts split

Broad agreement on his role: he starts and is the lead option. The only live question I found is whether Quin Snyder swaps Dort into the starting five for McCollum or Alexander-Walker. One SI Hawks writer expects the starting five to stay the same, with Dort rotating in during games, and allows that a change is possible if Dort plays well. That would affect Johnson's supporting cast more than his own role.

Left ankle sprain, out Monday vs Indiana

Johnson will miss Monday's game with a left ankle sprain but is expected to return Wednesday against Washington, so this is a short, single-game absence rather than a prolonged issue.

What would change this: Whether he practices or is upgraded ahead of Wednesday's game against Washington.

Research confidence: reported. Outlooks are grounded in web search over current reporting and refreshed through the season.
