Jarrett Allen

Consensus #26 · C10 · tier 5Week 3: 4 gamesUpdated Oct 26

Jarrett Allen is Cleveland's starting center and is expected to play through a lingering knee issue, though the early reporting suggests his minutes could be managed.

Role

Fox Sports (checked about 25 October) calls him the Cavaliers' starting center. He played 27 minutes in the home win over the Nets, with 21 points on 7-8 FG, 8 rebounds, 2 steals and a block. Fox says he could be on a soft minutes restriction because of the knee history, but that is analyst inference and I found no coach quote confirming it. Evan Mobley is the other starting big. Fox names Thomas Bryant, Peyton Watson and Jaylon Tyson as likely beneficiaries of any vacated minutes. Cavaliers Nation (21 October) says Diop and Tomlin were unavailable. I did not read a current starting-five or minutes page, so I can't give a usage rate. His wire note says he expects to play Thursday against the 76ers.

The case for

Allen has been efficient and productive when he plays, as the 21-point, 8-rebound opener against Brooklyn showed. Cleveland's coaching staff clearly wants Allen and Mobley on the floor together. Writers argue that more pick-and-roll and dump-off involvement would raise his touches. Last season's playoff coverage noted that the offense worked best when both bigs were true options.

The case against

The knee has lingered. He was questionable going into the opener, and Fox says he may be on a soft minutes limit. Coverage also describes a role that shrank as Mobley's offensive responsibility grew. Last season's data shows only 2 games played, so the sample is thin. The offense has often defaulted to the backcourt, and Mobley's lower three-point accuracy limits the spacing for Allen's pick-and-roll work.

Where analysts split

The split is how to pair Allen and Mobley. One camp, from Fox and King James Gospel, wants their minutes staggered so each gets more time without the other. The other camp, as the coaching staff has framed it, wants them together. Staggering would cap Allen's minutes. The other open question is whether the knee holds him to a managed workload or he returns to a normal one.
