Ausar Thompson
Ausar Thompson is a defense-first, rebounding and playmaking wing who is being tried as a secondary ball handler. His minutes are steady but not large, and the scoring is modest.
Role
Through five games, ESPN's player page (checked in search, within the last few days) shows 26.6 minutes per game. His game logs run 33, 19, 25, 29 and 26 minutes, so he has not been below 19. Pistons Roundtable (via Yahoo) reported that Detroit planned to use him as lead initiator for stretches, with Cade Cunningham playing off the ball. Reporting from the preseason opener said that. I did not find a source confirming whether Thompson starts, so I won't state it. Rotation competitors are not named in the current coverage I found. His ESPN line shows 0.0 percent from three through five games, so he is not a perimeter shooting threat.
Roundtable's coverage says there is a prevailing view in Detroit that he can initiate offense with and without Cunningham on the floor. He was an All-Defensive selection and the steals leader last season (Basketball-Reference). The box-score line is broad: 7.4 rebounds and 5.2 assists per game so far, with 8 assists against Charlotte on Oct. 28. A mid-range jumper has shown up, and the club extended him in the offseason.
His minutes have stayed in the 19 to 33 range, with no workload above 33 so far, and Cunningham remains the primary playmaker. Through five games he is 0-for-3 from three and 60 percent at the line, and he shoots 55 percent or better in some games only because he takes almost no threes. Turnovers are a recurring problem: 3, 3, 4 and 3 in four of five games. He also had 6 fouls against the Knicks. His 2024-25 minutes were managed carefully, per RotoWire.
Where analysts split
The open question is whether the point-forward role grows into a larger usage and minutes share, or stays a situational wrinkle behind Cunningham. Roundtable is optimistic about initiating. RotoWire's older notes say he doesn't project as a primary handler while Cunningham is there. The five-game sample doesn't settle it, and I found no beat-writer or tracker piece weighing in since the opener.
Research confidence: thin. Outlooks are grounded in web search over current reporting and refreshed through the season.
