Ayo Dosunmu
Dosunmu is Minnesota's first guard off the bench, a sixth man who fills in for either starting guard, and the team is 3-0 with him in that role.
Role
Sixth man, not a starter. SI's projection piece (about 4 days old) had him at 28-30 minutes a game, as last season. He played 29 minutes in the opener against Miami and 27 at Orlando (ESPN and Rotowire logs). Against Toronto he had 9 points and 3 assists and ran much of the first-half point guard minutes while LaMelo Ball was in foul trouble (SI, Time News); I did not find his minutes for that game. The starters are Anthony Edwards, Ball and Rudy Gobert, and the Wolves rotation pieces named by beat coverage are Terrence Shannon Jr. and Dosunmu. Preseason rest nights were reported, but I found nothing on regular-season back-to-back rest plans.
He is the first sub for any starter except Gobert, so foul trouble, rest nights and injuries to Edwards or Ball all raise his workload. Rotowire expects 30-plus minutes in closer games. He had 9 assists and 7 rebounds in 27 minutes at Orlando, and he has shared the floor with both Edwards and Ball.
The starters are set, so his minutes depend on game flow and on foul trouble or absences among the starters. The Wolves have won their three games by double digits. SI says the bench behind him is unsettled and could change, so his share of bench minutes and shots could shift. His scoring has also been modest: 16, 14 and 9 points in three games.
Where analysts split
Broad agreement on the role: sixth man at about 28-30 minutes. The only open question is the ceiling. Rotowire's 30-plus minutes needs close games or Ball and Edwards sitting, and the three wins so far were by 21, 22 and 23 points. I found no source arguing he will lose the job.
