Bam Adebayo

Consensus #35 · C12 · tier 4Week 3: 4 gamesUpdated Nov 2

Adebayo is Miami's starting center and a second option next to Giannis Antetokounmpo. Through the first six games he has produced steadily but not spectacularly, and he has had one groin issue.

Role

He has played 23 to 39 minutes in the games I could see in box scores: 31, 23, 39, 30 and 33 (twice). Per CBS/RotoWire, he is averaging 19.8 points, 8.5 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 2.3 steals and 0.8 blocks over the last four games on 50.9 percent shooting. Heat Nation reports Spoelstra is staggering some of Adebayo's and Antetokounmpo's minutes while he works out how to pair them. In one game Adebayo came out with about six minutes left in the first quarter so Giannis could have a longer opening stint. RotoWire names Bobby Portis and Nick Richards as the likely beneficiaries if he misses time. I did not find a rest or back-to-back plan, and I have not confirmed the exact starting five. The wire note says he practiced Monday with a groin issue and carries no designation.

The case for

He has found a groove next to Giannis: at least 20 points in three of his last four games, a season-high 27 on 11-of-14 shooting, and steady steals. Giannis publicly credited his defensive assignments for Miami's turnaround, and the Heat have won two straight. He also became Miami's all-time leading rebounder this week, and RotoWire notes he has averaged at least 18 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists and 1 steal in six straight seasons.

The case against

He started cold. Over the 0-4 stretch he averaged 11.8 points and shot 16.7 percent from three, and the Heat lost to Minnesota, Detroit, Charlotte and Dallas. Pundits including Shannon Sharpe and Joe Johnson questioned his role and his assertiveness. He has not yet had a double-double this season, and his three-point volume is inefficient: 0-for-5 in one game and 0-for-2 in another. Sharing the ball and the minutes with Giannis could cap his usage, and the groin issue is a recurring risk.

Where analysts split

The split is whether Adebayo is a scoring option at around 20 points a game next to Giannis, or a defense-and-rebounding hub whose offense shrinks as Giannis takes over. Underneath that is how Spoelstra staggers their minutes. This is based on one critical segment (Sharpe and Johnson) and beat-style notes, not a full analyst roundtable.
