Cason Wallace

Consensus #161 · SG59 · tier 6Week 3: 4 gamesOutUpdated Oct 26

Cason Wallace is OKC's expected full-time starting shooting guard next to Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. His value is mostly defensive and steals, and the shoulder injury that ended his Sunday game against the Clippers adds short-term uncertainty.

Role

He started the Clippers game in a lineup with Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Williams, Chet Holmgren and Isaiah Hartenstein (SI.com starters post, 25 October), then left with a shoulder injury and did not return (wire report). Before that, he played 19 minutes in the 116-104 win at San Antonio on 20 October (NBA.com player page). Last season he averaged 26.6 minutes over 77 games with 58 starts (FantasyData). Offensive usage is expected to stay modest (FantasyData). Ajay Mitchell and Jared McCain are the main backcourt competition for minutes. Coverage describes both as likely to get big minutes off the bench (NBC Sports). This is a back-to-back, and I did not find anything saying whether it affects his availability. A return date and a coach update on the shoulder have not been confirmed.

The case for

Sam Presti named Wallace, Mitchell and McCain as players who will get more minutes with Luguentz Dort traded to Atlanta (NBC Sports). Coverage calls Wallace the most likely of the three to start. He agreed to a five-year, $139 million extension (Shams Charania, ESPN), was All-Defensive Second Team last season, and led the NBA in total steals and deflections (FantasyData). That gives him a steady minutes floor and a clear route to steals.

The case against

His offense is the problem. In the 20 October game at San Antonio he went 0-4 from three, while McCain scored 20 off the bench in 22 minutes (ESPN). ESPN's note says the competition for backcourt minutes could make his scoring inconsistent. Thunderous Intentions argues Mitchell offers more offensive upside game to game, so OKC may lean on him when the offense stalls. The current shoulder injury adds risk on top of that. Wallace also sat out the last three preseason games for rest and missed one regular-season game before returning, according to Fox Sports.

Where analysts split

The disagreement is whether Wallace keeps the starting job and a large share of backcourt minutes when Mitchell and McCain are producing more on offense. Thunderous Intentions says Wallace will start but that OKC is right to hedge, and a Fox Sports item ties the lineup to Jalen Williams' health. Most sources still project Wallace as the starter. I found no coverage of how long the shoulder issue will last.
