Charles Bassey
Bassey is a depth center with a real but unsettled role, and his knee tendinopathy is the main thing deciding whether he plays.
Role
Yahoo/SB Nation (article dated within the last few days) says that in preseason, with Kristaps Porzingis out, Bassey was the clear third center behind Al Horford and Draymond Green. Porzingis was out to start 2026-27, and the same report named rookie two-way big Graham Ike as the likely replacement in the rotation when Bassey was ruled out for opening night. It also said rookie Yaxel Lendeborg may see a few minutes as the small-ball five. His NBA.com game log shows 13 minutes at Phoenix on Oct 24. I found no current minutes or usage tracker, so I have no usage rate or starter confirmation. Today's wire report lists him probable for Monday against Denver.
Blue Man Hoop argued in the offseason that he has a path to major minutes behind Horford and Porzingis. Golden State has little financial flexibility and let Quinten Post leave, and the team did not add another big. Horford's and Porzingis's minutes will need managing, and back-to-backs may be split, so injuries or rest could open real work. He also played energetically in five games for Golden State last season (10.6 points, 7.2 rebounds) and averaged 20.4 points and 11.7 rebounds in the G League.
The same Blue Man Hoop piece says his offensive package is limited and that rebounding size is not rare in the NBA. It also said not to expect him to repeat his rebounding efficiency from last season. Knee tendinitis kept him out of opening night, and he is still on the report with right patellar tendinopathy. Ike and Lendeborg are in position to take minutes if he is out or ineffective.
Where analysts split
The open question is whether Bassey keeps the third-center minutes once Porzingis returns, or whether he is crowded by Ike, Lendeborg and Green playing small-ball five. The sources I found are mostly offseason and early-season pieces, so I did not find analysts arguing this directly. A second question is how much his knee limits his availability.
Research confidence: thin. Outlooks are grounded in web search over current reporting and refreshed through the season.
