Chet Holmgren

Consensus #47 · C13 · tier 4Week 3: 4 gamesOutUpdated Oct 26

Holmgren is OKC's starting big man, and in two regular-season games he has produced mainly rebounds and blocks. The sample is tiny, and his quad issue appears to be behind him.

Role

He started both games, per Basketball Reference's page. NBA.com and Rotowire show 31 minutes at San Antonio on Oct 20 (14 points, 7 rebounds, 4 blocks) and 28 minutes against Denver on Oct 22 (12 points, 17 rebounds, 4 blocks). SI reported that OKC played four big men against Denver and that Holmgren's 27 minutes led that group, which differs by a minute from NBA.com's 28. Isaiah Hartenstein, rookie Aday Mara and Thomas Sorber share the frontcourt work, and a Thunderous Intentions piece from roughly 108 days ago says Holmgren is likely to play more at forward. No source I found gives a usage rate, a back-to-back rest plan or a confirmed starting five beyond those two starts. The wire note says he was ruled out of a preseason game against the Rockets for a quad issue, but Rotowire's Oct 19 item says he was available for the regular-season opener, and he has played since.

The case for

The optimists point to his 2025-26 season, which a ClutchPoints piece describes as a breakout: first All-Star selection, Defensive Player of the Year runner-up, All-Defensive First Team. Rotowire's July note citing Forbes says OKC's offseason moves of Isaiah Joe, Aaron Wiggins and Luguentz Dort thin the supporting cast, which could give him a larger offensive role. His early blocks (four in each game), his rebounding and a +12 against Denver fit that argument. SI says teammates have defended his competitiveness after a summer of criticism.

The case against

The skeptics start with the offense. He shot 3-of-8 and then 5-of-9 in the first two games, with no made threes, and he has attempted just one three in each game. His 2026 postseason was criticized, and the SI piece says that criticism ran through the summer. The Thunderous Intentions piece argues that the roster, with Hartenstein, Mara and Sorber, pushes him away from the basket and ends his days as a full-time rim protector. A crowded frontcourt could also cap his minutes, and the quad issue kept him out of the entire preseason, as the Rotowire note on Oct 19 says.

Where analysts split

The question is whether he plays center and anchors the defense, or shifts to forward next to another big and has to space the floor. The Thunderous Intentions piece favors the forward role and a need to improve his three-point shooting. The only game coverage I found, the SI recap, shows a lineup with four bigs and his interior impact, not a perimeter role. Two games is too few to settle it.

Injury: Out: assessed avoid

Patellar tendon tear, treated surgically/biologically

Report states at least 8-10 weeks out after a procedure for a patellar tendon tear, a significant injury that removes him as a season-long starter for the foreseeable future.

What would change this: Any update on healing progress or a revised return timeline as the 8-10 week window approaches.

Research confidence: thin. Outlooks are grounded in web search over current reporting and refreshed through the season.
