Clint Capela
Capela is a backup center who gets short-term bumps in minutes when Alperen Sengun or Steven Adams is out, and he is currently questionable with an ankle issue.
Role
Last season he was the backup behind Sengun, with Adams ahead of him on the depth chart at times. FTN's profile (about five days old) says he averaged 12.3 minutes over 75 games last season. The same page says Sengun (back) was out for a Lakers game and Capela moved into the starting lineup. It also lists 2026-27 averages of 23.0 minutes over 3 games, but that sample is tiny and I could not confirm the games. FTN's note on his last game: 22 minutes off the bench with 9 points, 5 rebounds, 4 blocks. I did not read a current depth chart or minutes tracker, so I can't say who starts or what the exact split is today. The Rotowire line is that he's unlikely to top about 20 minutes unless players ahead of him are hurt. The ankle is questionable for Monday vs. Boston per the wire. I found no practice report or coach update after it.
When Sengun sits, Capela steps into a larger role. FTN's profile calls him a short-term rebounds and blocks streamer on the back of a 22-minute game with 4 blocks. He reportedly focused on mobility this offseason and cut his body fat. Houston has few other backup centers, and Rotowire has said he is the only real backup-center option.
His role is capped and tied to other people's health. Reporting from last season calls his role secure but minor, with 10 to 12 minutes common, and says Adams outplayed him early. A Space City Scoop piece from last season argued he was losing his rotation spot. Now an ankle problem adds availability risk, and the 2026-27 minutes depend on who is out.
Where analysts split
The open question is whether Capela's bigger minutes are just fill-in work during Sengun or Adams absences, or a real backup role. Last season's reporting says he is capped near 20 minutes at most. The current coverage I found treats the jump as short-term streaming. No one I found argued for a lasting bump.
Injury: GTD: assessed minor
Ankle, ruled out vs. Celtics
He's been downgraded to out for Monday's game with an expected return of 11/04, so this looks like a short-term absence of one to two games rather than a prolonged issue.
What would change this: Practice/participation status ahead of the 11/04 target return date
Research confidence: thin. Outlooks are grounded in web search over current reporting and refreshed through the season.
