Collin Murray-Boyles

Consensus #194 · C52 · tier 7Week 3: 3 gamesUpdated Oct 26

Murray-Boyles is a second-year big who comes off the bench as Toronto's frontcourt reserve, and he starts when Jakob Poeltl, Scottie Barnes or Kawhi Leonard is out.

Role

ESPN's game log, as indexed, shows 20 minutes in the Oct. 21 opener against the Bulls and 18 minutes at Washington on Oct. 23, both off the bench. SI projects him as the sixth or seventh man alongside Jamal Shead, and coach Darko Rajakovic said he will play both power forward and center, sometimes next to Poeltl. No usage rate or confirmed starting five turned up in my search. The wire's rest note was for the preseason finale only, and I found no sign of a back-to-back rest plan.

The case for

He was a revelation in last spring's playoff series against Cleveland, averaging 14.4 points and 6.4 rebounds on 65.6% shooting in a reserve role (Hoops Rumors). He then averaged 14.4 points and 6.4 rebounds across seven preseason games. Yahoo/Sports Illustrated coverage floats a Sixth Man of the Year case. ESPN's analysis says his switchable defense keeps him on the floor next to Leonard and Barnes, and Toronto picked up his 2027-28 option, which signals commitment.

The case against

The roster is crowded. Leonard, Barnes and Poeltl are ahead of him, and SI says it is still unclear how much Toronto will use him as a small-ball center. His first two regular-season games came in 18 to 20 minutes, with 6 and 8 points on 28.6% and 50.0% shooting. He also had five fouls at Washington. Last season RotoWire described his role as up-and-down, with spot starts and some games under 10 minutes.

Where analysts split

The open question is whether his role grows beyond a bench role of roughly 18 to 22 minutes. Optimists point to the preseason production and the Sixth Man talk. Cautious sources, like SI, call him a sixth or seventh man whose small-ball center minutes are still undefined. Starting only when Poeltl is out is the part that is agreed.
