Day'Ron Sharpe
Sharpe is Brooklyn's projected starting center for 2026-27 after the Nic Claxton trade, and the open question is whether he holds the job and the minutes, not whether he gets the chance. The shoulder soreness that kept him out of Thursday's preseason game has no designation attached, and I found nothing newer on it.
Role
He started the preseason opener (Yahoo/Nets On SI, about 25 days old) and is described as the projected starter (Nets Wire, Oct 18). CBS/RotoWire (Jun 24, 2026) named Danny Wolf (ankle) as his main threat for the top center spot. The same piece says he averaged 12.4 points, 9.6 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 1.6 steals and 1.1 blocks in 28.8 minutes over nine starts since 2024-25. No source I found gives a minutes or usage target for this season. I did not read a current depth chart or rotation tracker. Julius Randle, acquired in the Claxton deal, is the expected frontcourt partner at power forward, per RotoWire. Brooklyn re-signed Sharpe to a two-year, $20 million deal (Shams Charania via RotoWire, Jun 29).
With Claxton gone, Sharpe has little center competition. RotoWire's analysis says he has a clear path to minutes, with Randle as an experienced partner. His small-sample starter line, about a double-double with solid playmaking and steals and blocks, suggests the production holds up in a larger role. He was also expected to be fully recovered from thumb surgery by the start of 2026-27.
The sample is small: only nine starts in two seasons, and he was benched again in March 2026 after starting. Coverage says his ability to hold down the middle will be tested all year. Wolf is a named competitor. A new shoulder issue, even minor, adds risk after the thumb ligament surgery that ended his last season. The preseason opener came against weak competition, so it says little about regular-season impact.
Where analysts split
The split is whether Sharpe is a true starter-level center who plays about 28 or more minutes a night, or a role player whose minutes get shared with Wolf and other bigs once the rotation settles. The Nets-focused outlets are optimistic. Nobody I found has yet written a skeptical case about his minutes.
Research confidence: thin. Outlooks are grounded in web search over current reporting and refreshed through the season.
