Deandre Ayton

Consensus #282 · C79 · tier 7Week 3: 4 gamesUpdated Oct 26

Ayton is Washington's first big off the bench, and three regular-season games show a 15 to 16 minute, low-usage role. It grows only if Anthony Davis or Alex Sarr misses time.

Role

Through three regular-season games he averages 15.3 minutes, 7.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 0.7 blocks on 76.9 percent shooting, with a 13.9 usage rate (ESPN splits and Hoops Nightly, checked 26 Oct). He has not played more than 16.3 minutes in any game. CBS Sports (Rotowire) has Sarr as the starting center in the season opener, with Ayton behind him. It projects 15-18 minutes a night. Rotowire's earlier preseason notes, citing The Athletic's Josh Robbins, have Sarr and Davis expected to start when healthy. Ayton started preseason games when Sarr was recovering from an offseason issue (the snippet is cut off) and when Davis was rested. I did not find a current depth chart or a read of the live rotation page, so the starting five beyond the opener is not confirmed. He has no injury designation. His only absence in the coverage I found was sitting out FIBA play for the Bahamas, which Marc Stein reported as apparent maintenance (Rotowire, Aug 27).

The case for

Washington traded for him to be the primary backup big, and he has embraced it. Wiz of Awes says he is comfortable screening and rolling, and he isn't asking for touches. He is efficient on very few shots. He is a former No. 1 pick in a contract year, so he is motivated, and his preseason box scores included a 10-rebound game in 17 minutes. Davis has a lengthy injury history. Wiz of Awes argues that any Davis absence opens a much bigger opportunity for Ayton, and a Sarr absence would do the same.

The case against

He is third in the big man pecking order behind Davis and Sarr, and the Wizards can go smaller with AJ Dybantsa or Tre Johnson at the four. That caps his minutes in the mid-teens, and his usage is low. Wiz of Awes asks whether he will accept a lesser bench role. CBS Sports' Rotowire blurb says he needs volume and minutes to matter in standard formats. Last season he averaged 27.2 minutes as the Lakers' starter, and these early games are far below that.

Where analysts split

The disagreement is not about the current role, since sources agree he is the backup. It is about how much upside the role has. Optimists see a 15-18 minute floor that rises when Davis or Sarr sits. Skeptics see a third big with a fixed cap, and they doubt he stays content in that role.
