Derik Queen
Queen is a backup center behind Yves Missi who is producing in limited minutes, and his ceiling this season depends on Missi's knee and on whether coach Jamahl Mosley trusts his defense.
Role
He came off the bench in the opener against Indiana (Oct 21) and played about 18 minutes. He played 29 minutes against Utah on Friday after Missi left with a left knee injury and did not return. On Saturday against Denver, Missi was out and Mosley started DeAndre Jordan, not Queen. Jordan played 20 minutes and Queen played 24, scoring 17 points with 8 rebounds. CBS/RotoWire (Oct 20) says Queen competes for minutes with Missi and Karlo Matkovic. Missi's return timeline has not been confirmed in what I found. I did not read any minutes tracker or depth chart page.
He produces in small samples. He had a double-double in 18 minutes on opening night, 12 points, 7 rebounds, 2 blocks and 2 steals in 29 minutes against Utah, and 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting in 24 minutes against Denver. Fox Sports/RotoWire calls him a primary beneficiary if Missi misses time. His free-throw rate, the rebounding and the passing give him a high floor, and the Pelicans exercised his team option on Oct 20.
Defense is the problem. In last season's coverage, the coach preferred Missi to close games, and Queen was benched in fourth quarters. Pelican Debrief noted on opening night that he committed fouls and a turnover, and was subbed out with about seven minutes left. NBC Sports argues that Mosley, a defensive-minded coach, will not lean on Queen's offense much. Mosley chose Jordan over Queen as the fill-in starter, which signals a limited role even with Missi out.
Where analysts split
The question is whether Queen's offense can outweigh his defense enough to earn starter-level or closing minutes from Mosley. The cautious view holds that he stays a 18 to 29 minute backup, with Jordan and Missi preferred for defense. The optimistic view holds that his production forces more minutes, especially while Missi is hurt.
