Derrick White
White is a core starter who plays big minutes at both ends. His defense and playmaking are steady, and his shooting efficiency is the open question, so expect uneven scoring nights.
Role
He is in the rotation as a regular guard alongside Jayson Tatum and Paul George, and the Celtics' recent box scores show 18 to 36 minutes a game. Tracked games: 36 minutes in the Oct 20 opener loss to Detroit, 33 at NYK on Oct 23, 18 in the Oct 26 blowout of Chicago, 33 against Brooklyn on Oct 27 in overtime, 26 against Chicago on Oct 30, and 34 at Orlando on Nov 1 per NBA.com's game log. Minutes fall in blowouts and rise in close games. Forbes reported him available for the Brooklyn game, and the right hip synovitis listing was probable. He then played Oct 30 and Nov 1, so the hip has not cost him games. I did not read a current starting-five or minutes-tracker page, so I cannot say who he competes with for the work. Preseason, he was reported starting on Oct 10 with a rest note attached, and I have not seen a back-to-back rest plan.
NBC Sports Boston's Chris Forsberg (Sept 10) argued that Tatum's return and George's arrival let White settle back into catch-and-shoot work instead of carrying the offense. He noted White ranked fourth in net rating among players with 30+ minutes last season, and that a shooting rebound could earn him the All-Star nod. Fox Sports calls his role as one of Boston's most important players essentially set.
His shooting was his worst as a Celtic last season, 32.7% from three and 39.2% overall per Hardwood Houdini, and the slump has carried into this year. Fox Sports had him at 12.5 points per game and 31.8% from three through four games. Against Brooklyn he shot 5-of-15, and he turned the ball over six times in 18 minutes against Chicago on Oct 26. At 32, with a hip issue just cleared, some doubt that the slump was only a role issue.
Where analysts split
The disagreement is whether last season's shooting collapse was situational, from carrying the offense while Tatum was out, or an age-related decline. The optimists say it was situational and that the added star power fixes it. Skeptics point to the early-season three-point rate and shot selection as evidence it has not turned yet. Nobody I found disputes his minutes or his defensive value.
