Desmond Bane
Bane is a starting guard and a top-two scoring option for Orlando while Paolo Banchero is out with a high ankle sprain, and his early shooting has been poor.
Role
He starts alongside Franz Wagner. Hottakes.com, citing Underdog NBA about two days ago, had Orlando starting Jase Richardson, Bane, Anthony Black, Wagner and Wendell Carter Jr. against Toronto. Squawka lists Bane as a starter in the Oct. 30 win at Toronto, where he scored 28 with 6 assists. I found no reported minutes target or usage rate for this season. An early-season stats page showed about 33 minutes per game over 5 games, but I did not fetch it, so treat that as unverified. Banchero is out 4 to 6 weeks from Oct. 24 (ESPN). Jalen Suggs is out at least two weeks with a knee bone bruise. Black, Tristan da Silva and Richardson are the nearest competitors for guard and wing minutes. Yahoo's fantasy injury column names da Silva and Black as the likely beneficiaries of the extra minutes. The wire note says Bane was rested for a preseason game, which predates the regular season. It does not suggest a current rest plan, and I found no reported back-to-back rest plan.
With Banchero and Suggs out, the offense runs through Wagner and Bane. Bane's drive-and-kick threes and screen actions are expected to generate good looks for shooters (SI's Magic site). Orlando went 7-3 without Banchero last season with Wagner and Bane leading. Bane also played all 82 games last season (Hoops Rumors), and he scored 28 in Toronto after a slow start.
Bane has started slowly for the second straight year. He shot 3-for-10 from three in the opener and was scoreless in the first half against Minnesota on Oct. 23. Yahoo's Full Court Magic podcast called his first two games brutal. The Magic are 2-3 with a new head coach, Sean Sweeney, and several injuries. A thin backcourt could push defenses toward Bane and Wagner and hurt his efficiency.
Where analysts split
The open question is whether Bane's extra creation load becomes steady scoring and playmaking, or whether the slow start continues. Coverage so far is not a real split, since no one argues he loses his role. The debate is about shooting efficiency and how much playmaking falls to him versus Wagner, who is described as the likely lead scorer.
