Dylan Harper
Harper is a high-minute, high-usage third guard in the Spurs' three-guard group with Fox and Castle. Through six games he has been playing about 33 minutes a night.
Role
ESPN's player page (snapshot, not re-fetched) shows 6 games at 33.3 minutes, 18.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 4.8 assists. His last five games ran 28 to 39 minutes, including 39 on Oct. 31 against Minnesota. An Air Alamo piece from about four days before today says coach Mitch Johnson started him alongside Fox and Castle. I did not confirm the starting five from a box score or lineup page. Preseason coverage from Fox Sports and The Athletic said Harper started when Fox was scratched, and Fox Sports said he would move to the bench once Fox was healthy. The competition for guard minutes is Fox, Castle and Devin Vassell. Whether he sits back-to-backs is not reported. The wire note on his rest day is not re-reported here.
The Athletic's preseason read was that he is good enough to command starter minutes and close games. He has since played 30 to 39 minutes in each of his last five games and has had eight assists in a game. Air Alamo argues the three-guard look puts pressure on defenses and that he is only now being unleashed. Harper said the three guards will be hard to guard.
His efficiency is uneven: he shot 4 of 17 against Utah on Oct. 28, and ESPN shows 34.8% from three over six games. Air Alamo's own piece says the jump shot still needs to fall. Three high-usage guards with Wembanyama means shots are shared. Fox is paid on a four-year, $229 million extension and the Spurs said they remain committed to him as the starting point guard. That could cut Harper's minutes when everyone is healthy, or if the coach goes back to the earlier bench plan. His minutes may also be inflated by the Oct. 28 overtime game.
Where analysts split
The disagreement is whether the 30-plus minute starter role holds when Fox and Castle are healthy together, or whether Harper drifts back to a sixth-man role. Preseason Fox Sports coverage said bench, while the recent Air Alamo piece says he is starting. Beyond that, the coverage I found is mostly a single story and I found no independent skeptical analysis.
