Isaiah Hartenstein
Hartenstein is OKC's starting center, and through five games he's a rebounding and passing big on modest minutes of about 23 to 26 a night, with rookie Aday Mara as the one threat to that workload.
Role
He starts at center. His minutes in the five games run 23, 26, 26, 27 and 25 (NBA.com game log, checked Nov 2), and Flashscore shows 23.8 minutes, 9.4 points and 9.6 rebounds per game. He hasn't scored more than 15 points, and he has taken 10 or fewer shots in each game. Chet Holmgren plays more minutes than he does (Fox Sports, Oct 27 recap). Mara, the rookie, got nearly 12 minutes off the bench in a game where Hartenstein had foul trouble. CBS noted his minutes could rise slightly when Jaylin Williams (wrist) left a game early, so Williams's health matters too. The wire note we hold says an ankle issue kept him out of a preseason game. I found no later report on the ankle, and nothing in the regular-season game log shows him missing time.
He starts, he rebounds at a high rate (12, 13 and 14 boards in three of the last four games), and he adds passing and screening that the Thunder lean on. The Yahoo report card noted he had a career-high 27.9 minutes per game last season with OKC. He also looks efficient when he gets shots, going 6-for-7 against Phoenix. If Williams misses time, the minutes could tick up.
His points and minutes are capped, since he scores in single digits or low teens and plays alongside Holmgren and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. Foul trouble has cut his minutes (five fouls against the Clippers per Fox Sports, and 17 minutes against the Spurs). One writer argues Mara's shot-blocking could keep taking minutes, especially against big teams like San Antonio. He also had a poor shooting night at Houston (3-for-8, 3 steals, 2 turnovers, 3 fouls), and the team lost.
Where analysts split
The open question is whether Mara's debut flash turns into a regular share of the center minutes. Thunderous Intentions (about 11 days old) says Hartenstein could keep losing minutes. CBS and the starter's steady 23 to 27 minutes show no change yet. I found no coach comment or beat-writer minutes report settling it.
