Isaiah Jackson

Consensus #144 · C36 · tier 7Week 3: 3 gamesUpdated Oct 26

Isaiah Jackson is the Clippers' starting center through the first week of the season, but his hold on the job looks conditional because Brook Lopez has been a close second.

Role

Coach Ty Lue named him the opening-night starter, with Darius Garland, Max Strus, Rui Hachimura and Derrick Jones in the first unit (Rotowire/SI.com, reported around Oct. 18). In the Oct. 21 opener against Sacramento he played about 15 minutes, because of foul trouble, and scored 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting with 5 rebounds. Lopez played 27 minutes in that game (NBC Sports). Yahoo's game log shows 27:50, 6 points and 6 rebounds for Jackson in the Oct. 23 loss to the Lakers. That is two regular-season games, so the minutes are not settled. Lopez is the primary backup. Yanic Konan Niederhauser has a foot injury and was reported to be out to start the year. I did not find a published minutes or rotation tracker, so I have no usage rate.

The case for

Lue publicly committed to Jackson, who started throughout preseason. NBC Sports said the starting spot should raise his ceiling, and he was efficient in the opener. Yahoo and other previews argue that his athleticism and transition running next to Garland could produce a breakout. Last season's 17 games with the Clippers were all off the bench, so he has not yet had a full run as a starter.

The case against

Foul trouble cut his opener short, and Lopez got the bulk of the center minutes and outplayed him, according to a Rotowire note. That note says Jackson could lose the first-unit job if Lopez keeps outproducing him. 213hoops calls him undersized for a starting center, a below-average rebounder who can get pushed around by bigger centers. Rotowire's player page said his role was unclear heading into the year. It also noted he has not been a consistent asset, and that his minutes dropped to 13.3 per game in 2023-24.

Where analysts split

The question is whether Jackson keeps the starting job and a starter's minutes once Lopez has been playing well and Jackson's fouls keep him off the floor. Rotowire and NBC Sports see the job as potentially at risk. Fox Sports' injury page said the same. The preview pieces expect Jackson to hold the role and break out. Each side has only one or two games to point to so far.
