Isaiah Stewart

Consensus #106 · C27 · tier 7Week 3: 3 gamesUpdated Oct 26

Stewart is Memphis's backup center behind Zach Edey. He started once as a spot fill-in when Edey sat, and it's too early to say how much more than that he will get.

Role

Per NBC Sports/Rotoworld (Oct 24-25), Stewart debuted Friday against the Warriors off the bench, playing 16 minutes with four fouls in the first half, mostly when starter Zach Edey was off the floor. Rotoworld said he would likely cut into Quinten Post's minutes, and Post logged 19:48 in that game per Roundtable. On Sunday at Sacramento he started at center, alongside Ty Jerome, Cedric Coward, Jaylen Wells and Cameron Boozer, because Edey sat for injury management. NBC reported 22 minutes, and a Sofascore recap credited him with 13 points, 5 rebounds, 2 blocks and 2-of-3 from three. Memphis won, 123-112. No usage rate or season minutes trend has been reported yet. I did not find a published rotation tracker.

The case for

Memphis is rebuilding, and Stewart was traded there partly so he could compete for more minutes than the roughly 22.7 a game he averaged in Detroit last season. His Sunday start produced 13 points, two blocks and a stretch-big look from three. If Edey's minutes are managed, or Post's play slips, Stewart could hold a bigger frontcourt role.

The case against

Before the season, Yahoo noted he was not expected to begin it in the starting lineup. His Sunday start came only because Edey sat, and NBC noted his early playing time was likely shaped by the ankle sprain that cost him most of the preseason. Foul trouble limited him to 16 minutes in his debut. Post is also still getting backup-center minutes, so Stewart may stay a bench big once Edey is available.

Where analysts split

The open question is whether Stewart becomes the clear primary backup to Edey, taking Post's minutes, or splits that work with Post. A related question is how often Edey sits for injury management, because that is what opens a start. The sources I found do not settle either one.

Research confidence: thin. Outlooks are grounded in web search over current reporting and refreshed through the season.
