Ivica Zubac
Zubac is the Pacers' starting center when healthy, but he is out with a left ankle sprain and has no reported return date, so his rest-of-season value starts with how fast he comes back.
Role
Before the injury, Zubac was the starting center. Jay Huff started in his place on Monday, and Yahoo expected him to keep starting. Yahoo noted Huff played at least 20 minutes in each of his first two games in that role. Athlon (checked Nov 2) says Huff and Larry Nance Jr. could both keep larger roles, and its Friday report said Huff and Obi Toppin could. I found no reported minutes or usage figure for Zubac. The Pacers play 15 back-to-backs this season, per SI, and I found no reported rest plan for him.
He is a rebounding and defensive anchor, and Indiana has built its frontcourt around him. Roundtable cites his fourth-place league finish in rebounding at 12.6 per game and a second-team All-Defense selection. An X-ray on his left ankle came back negative. He was reported walking without a boot on Monday. The injury is a sprain, not a structural problem, and Fox lists him as day-to-day.
The sprain has already cost him four straight games, through at least Sunday's game against the Nets, and the Pacers have given no timetable. He also had an ankle sprain right after the trade from the Clippers and missed his Pacers debut. Before this injury he averaged 9.0 points and 9.0 rebounds in the Pacers' first three games, per Roundtable, so his production has been modest so far. The Pacers are short on healthy players, and Huff has a real claim on playing time. Last season's line in our data shows 3 games played.
Where analysts split
Broad agreement that he is out near-term and that Huff starts in his absence. What I did not find is any reporting on when he returns or whether he will sit back-to-backs, so the open question is the return date, which analysts have not forecast. The only difference in the coverage is who shares the extra frontcourt minutes: Athlon names Nance in one report and Toppin in another.
Injury: Out: assessed real
Ankle sprain, missing 5th straight game
Zubac has missed four straight games with the ankle and is out again versus Atlanta; despite team optimism he is being treated week-to-week with a 11/9 target, so he should not be relied on in the near term.
What would change this: Any practice participation report or change from 'week-to-week' language ahead of 11/9.
Research confidence: reported. Outlooks are grounded in web search over current reporting and refreshed through the season.
