Jalen Duren
Duren is the Pistons' starting center but is out with a right hamstring strain, so his near-term value depends on when he clears the re-evaluation.
Role
Before the injury he was the starting center, and he played only 10 minutes in the Oct. 23 game at Miami before leaving. With him out, NBC Sports said Paul Reed would start and get heavy minutes, with Tolu Smith getting some run. NBC and FanSided both say John Collins may play center in small lineups. Reed played 26 minutes at Miami (19 points, 11 rebounds). A Yahoo piece dated two days ago said Duren missed his fourth straight game. I found no usage-rate or minutes-trend data for Duren this season. Last season's line in our data covers only 2 GP and 76 MIN, so it says little about his normal workload.
The injury is a strain with a stated re-evaluation point, not a season-level problem. ESPN lists an estimated return of Nov. 9 (via Yahoo). Detroit just signed him to a five-year, $200M extension, and NBC Sports calls him an All-NBA center and the anchor at both ends. He should reclaim the starting job when healthy, because the replacements (Reed, Smith, Collins) are stopgaps.
Coverage stresses that two weeks is a re-evaluation date, not a guaranteed return. BVM Sports notes teams are careful with hamstrings because of reinjury risk. FanSided says not to expect him for the rest of the month. Detroit has gone 4-1 without him in part, and Reed has produced, so there is little pressure to rush him back. A ramp-up in minutes after return is possible, but I found no reporting on that.
Where analysts split
Broad agreement on the role: Reed starts and Collins plays small-ball center while Duren is out. The only open question is timing. ESPN's Nov. 9 estimate sits next to caution that the two-week mark is only a re-evaluation, and nothing I found says whether he returns right after it.
Injury: Out: assessed real
Right hamstring strain, out ~2 weeks
Confirmed strain with a two-week re-evaluation timeline and named expected return date, meaning he'll miss multiple games; Reed, Collins and Smith see bumps in his absence.
What would change this: Re-evaluation update around Nov. 9 or any practice participation report before then
Research confidence: reported. Outlooks are grounded in web search over current reporting and refreshed through the season.
