Jared McCain
McCain is a bench scoring guard for Oklahoma City whose minutes have so far followed his shooting, and he has been ruled out Monday against the Hawks for rest.
Role
Rotowire (via CBS Sports and Fox Sports, Oct 14) has him expected to come off the bench behind Cason Wallace to start the regular season, with a meaningful second-unit role. Rotowire logged 22 minutes in the Oct 20 opener against the Spurs (20 points, 6-of-8 from three) and 18 minutes in the Oct 22 win over Denver (1-of-6 from the field). Usage rate and a starting-five change are not in anything I read. The Monday rest absence was supplied by the wire note, and I found no reporting on a pattern of sitting back-to-backs. A Heavy piece published recently on a Jalen Williams injury says Ajay Mitchell, Alex Caruso and McCain were the three bench players who played more than 20 minutes. I did not read its details, so I cannot say how long Williams is out or what it means for McCain.
He is a microwave scorer who shoots threes at volume. After joining OKC he averaged 4.6 three-point attempts a game and made 39.1% of them (Yahoo, citing his Thunder stretch). He opened this season with 20 points off the bench. The Thunder are described as a team that needed perimeter shooting, and he gets extra run when rotation players are out, as he did with 26 points in 28 minutes last season in a blowout.
He sits behind Wallace and plays on a deep, healthy-when-whole roster with Mitchell and Caruso. Rotowire's note after the Denver game said his opening-night output was not something he could repeat, and Fox's summary says his playing time could fluctuate with whether his shots fall. CBS shows last season's regular-season line at 20.3 minutes and 39.1% shooting, and a CBS blurb from last season called him a very small part of the rotation. Last year's Sixers-era injury history is also relevant, but I did not research it.
Where analysts split
The open question is whether he holds a steady second-unit role, or whether his minutes depend on his shooting and on who is injured. The Heavy item suggests Williams's injury could open more minutes. Nothing I read gave an actual minutes split or a ranking among Wallace, Mitchell and Caruso.
Research confidence: thin. Outlooks are grounded in web search over current reporting and refreshed through the season.
