Jaxson Hayes
Hayes is a shot-blocking big on a rotation that is still sorting itself out. He opened the season in the starting five, then moved back to the bench in the next game I found, so his role is not settled.
Role
Per Fox Sports' player page (read via search, about 25 October), he started the opener against Memphis alongside Jaren Jackson Jr. and Lauri Markkanen. He played 26 minutes and had five points, six blocks and two steals. Against New Orleans he swapped places with Ace Bailey and came off the bench for 26 minutes, ahead of Bailey in minutes. That page's preseason note, which is also on CBS Sports (Rotowire, Oct 13), said he was the favorite to start while Jusuf Nurkic (foot) is sidelined. It also said Utah could use Bailey in the first unit depending on matchups. A separate NBC Sports note says he played 19 minutes against Denver with two points, three rebounds, four assists and three blocks. That note is undated, so I cannot tell where it falls in the schedule. I did not find Nurkic's current status or a return date. Kyle Filipowski was named in July as a competitor for backup center minutes. I have not read a current depth chart or minutes tracker, and I found nothing on back-to-back rest.
He is the most athletic center on the roster and a lob threat who runs the floor. He can fill the shot-blocking gap left when Walker Kessler was traded. He has already produced a six-block game and a 17-point game on 7-of-8 shooting. If Nurkic's foot keeps him out, Hayes is the favorite for the starting center job. Last season's line, from our data, shows 21 blocks and 39 makes on 48 attempts in 213 minutes over only 3 games. That is a very small sample.
Utah's frontcourt is deep, with Jackson, Markkanen, Nurkic, Filipowski and Bailey all in the mix. The coach has already shifted to a smaller lineup with Bailey starting. NBC Sports' note says he is unlikely to see big minutes once the rotation is full. His free-throw shooting was poor in the opener, and in his Jazz debut he had few points. His role looks tied to Nurkic's injury and to matchups.
Where analysts split
The question is whether Hayes keeps a first-unit role. One side says he starts while Nurkic is out, and Rotowire (Oct 13) named him the favorite. The other side points to the Pelicans game, where Utah went smaller with Bailey starting. Whether Hayes's minutes hold at about 26 once Nurkic returns is also open.
