Joel Embiid

Consensus #85 · C23 · tier 7Week 3: 4 gamesGTDUpdated Nov 2

Embiid is the Sixers' starting center when he plays, and the team is managing a right foot plantar fascia problem by sitting him on back-to-backs, so expect a high-impact player who is not available every night.

Role

He started against the Knicks on Oct. 30, per NBC Sports. NBC Philadelphia (Nov. 1) says he has averaged 35.2 minutes through five games. That is above his career high of 34.6, set in 2022-23. ESPN's Shams Charania said on Oct. 20 that the plan was to limit Embiid and LeBron James to around 30 minutes a game within the first few weeks. The two have not matched so far. He has missed two games, both with the same foot designation, and both on a back-to-back. In one of those games, against the Pistons, the Sixers started James at center. Maxey, James, Edgecombe and Jaylen Brown share the offense. Adem Bona was named as the likely starter in Embiid's absence in one NBC Sports blurb. Dominick Barlow and Ariel Hukporti are out, and Tacko Fall and Jabari Walker were questionable for Saturday. I did not find a usage rate.

The case for

He is playing heavy minutes with no apparent limit, and the foot absences so far were scheduled rest on back-to-backs rather than a new injury. PhillyVoice notes that Monday's game against the Bulls sits between off days. With LeBron James on the roster, PhillyVoice also ran a piece on how James is making Embiid's life easier.

The case against

He has a long injury history, and the foot is being managed rather than treated as healed. Last season we hold only 5 games played. He missed two of the Sixers' first six games, and a heavy-minutes pace sits awkwardly with the stated plan to limit him to about 30. He also struggled in one game: 3-for-12 shooting with 10 points in 33 minutes, though ClutchPoints did not date that game.

Where analysts split

The open question is how often the foot management costs him games beyond back-to-backs. The 30-minute plan Charania reported against the 35.2 he has actually averaged is also unresolved. I found no analyst making either argument at length, so this reflects the reporting, not a documented debate.

Plantar fascia management, questionable for Monday

Embiid already sat out one game for right foot plantar fascia management and is questionable to miss a second straight game Monday against Chicago; this is an ongoing management situation, not a one-off rest day, so he should be treated as a game-time uncertainty until confirmed active.

What would change this: Monday's final injury report/active list for the Bulls game and whether he avoids a third missed game
